The Aston Webb Building is a Grade II listed stone clad five storey building of architectural interest which wraps around the picturesque Rose Crescent in central Cambridge. The building houses student and Fellow’s accommodation on the upper floors, which sit above a plinth of boutique shops at street level with a basement below. As main contractor Cocksedge delivered a sensitive modernisation scheme relocating shower rooms from the basement to the upper rooms and remodelling the basement to create student kitchens. M&E services upgrades included new installations helping the College move away from gas to electricity as the primary fuel, as part of a holistic decarbonation target.
A major part of the works included the replacement of the lead and slate roof coverings, which also allowed an upgrade of insulation and ventilation, repair of dormer windows and structural and cosmetic repairs to the chimneys and facing stonework. A large temporary roof was erected to protect the building during the work, and all logistics were carefully planned to avoid disruption to the College, shops and associated public footfall.
Upon completion of the project the Client said: “It has been a pleasure to work alongside the Cocksedge team on our project. Adrian Bishop led the project very well and along with David Olen (Project Manager) suggested a number of improvements to the design which became apparent during the build. The site team were excellent in terms of communication and neighbour relations, and we were well supported by Mark Ashworth’s work on costing proposed contract changes. A great team effort”
