As part of a phased project to modernise Greshams senior school accommodation, the East Wing of Big School has been subject to building fabric repairs and structural alterations to remodel classrooms and incorporate a new Headmaster’s and marketing suite. The scheme also included the insertion of a new second floor structure, supported from the bottom cord of the roof trusses, with a roof-space fit out to provide the first phase of a new exams centre. A major part of the brief was to upgrade insulation and improve energy efficiency of the existing building, which included insulated wall-linings, double-glazed sliding sashes and new MEP services all designed to complement the features of Big School, originally constructed in 1903. The headmaster’s office includers high-quality finishes and bespoke cabinetry.
Phase 2 of the project has seen the 1960s Reith Building undergo extensive remodelling and refurbishment to update the teaching faculties. The works also included window replacements, new MEP services and a roof extension providing a link to the adjacent Big School building.
The project was awarded a non-residential buildings commendation at the 2025 Norfolk and Norwich Design and Craftsmanship Awards.
