Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards 2026

We are delighted that two of our recently completed projects have been recognised with Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards.

The Awards celebrate best practices in the design and construction of the built environment within Greater Cambridge and are held and judged by Greater Cambridge Shared Planning in conjunction with the Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry (CFCI).

Projects delivered by Cocksedge received the following Awards:

The Arts Theatre Cambridge – A contemporary reimagining of an historic theatre.

  • Winner of Best Conservation, Alteration, or Extension of an Existing Building (over £3m construction value)
  • Winner of The Craftmanship Award
  • Highly Commended Contractor Award

Judges’ comments:

“The 90-year-old Arts Theatre is one of Cambridge’s best known public buildings, and we were astonished that its comprehensive refurbishment was carried out with minimal impact or disturbance (not even skips!) to its neighbours.  The new, elegant, maple-clad auditorium is perhaps the most visible change, but we also saw the vastly improved under- and behind-stage areas, the new entrance from Peas Hill, and the complete renewal of electrical and stage services, making productions and changeovers vastly more efficient.  We heard of endless ‘discoveries’ adding complexity to the project, including how the balcony had to be completely rebuilt.

“At both Hinsley Lane and the Arts Theatre, Cocksedge worked closely with the clients to deliver exemplary outcomes in challenging circumstances.  This was particularly the case with the Arts Theatre, where the building revealed problem after problem as the project progressed, and Cocksedge’s ingenuity, commitment, persistence and ability to find solutions was incredible.”

Hinsley Lane: The Passivhaus-certified scheme for St Johns College, provides 245 rooms in 39 townhouses, arranged as terraces around shared gardens, made a new central lane.

  • Winner of Best New Neighbourhood
  • Highly Commended Contractor Award

Judge’s comments

“Hinsley Lane is a St John’s College-led project, in partnership with Clare Hall and Lucy Cavendish.  It’s a striking addition to north Cambridge, providing 245 units in 39 town houses, built in stepped terraces using a distinctive red brick and with external social spaces, bringing life back to the area. On the site of an old farm, care has been taken to protect what’s left of the former landscape and to reinstate an orchard and abandoned former routes (including a section of Roman Road).  The houses have gardens and swales for water management.  The project is all-electric, Passivhaus certified, and an important contribution to the net zero pathways of the three Colleges.”
